the power of words

Posted by hema on February 8, 2008

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them
fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit
was, they told the two frogs that they were as goo It is therefore our task, as creative participants in the universe, to re dream our world. d as dead.

The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit
with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop,
that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took
heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down
and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again,
the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He
jumped even harder and finally made it out.

When he got out, the other frogs said, “Did you not hear us? ” The frog explained to them that he was deaf.

He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.

maryam: he guessed it through frog sign language…two leaps up and down and 1 backward flip whilst sticking the tongue out means ‘did you not hear us?’ I know because i used to be a frog but then a prince came along and said salaam (kissing before marriage is not acceptable)and i turned into a princess, im no longer a frog but i can still leap up and down like one and understand frog language. I’m talented like that

jtm-i love it too:) did you get my text message the other day? i hope not, had to sit through a stupid psychology lecture and took it out on you.

samia- love it- have put it up:)

maryam- i did think of that when i first heard this story. but maybe it’s because not all deaf people are the same, and have different ranges of hearing. Plus, a lot of deaf people rely heavily on lip reading, which is why it is important to face the person you are talking to (the support tutor of my deaf student would be so proud:)

ymiss-hahaha. a fairy take that is both deaf and Islam friendly. maybe you should consider rewriting them all!
and i’m actually learning British sign language as opposed to frog sign language (?) if you want me to teach you some!

  6. Hema: no i didn’t haha yeh some can be really stupid others are really interesting, oo sign language doing a module on gesture, covering quite a bit of sign language and stuff it’s really interesting

Ymiss: haha only you would think of something like that!

hey, good idea. you could get them to recall their experiences of the effects of words, both positive and negative.

    here’s mine.

positive- when i was playing around with the idea of going into teaching, the majority of (well meaning) people i know told me not to bother, because there was no way i would be able to handle the pressures of a classroom, because i was too shy and timid etc etc, and then just one comment from someone i trusted saying i would make a great teacher gave me the motivation i needed to start thinking about it seriously.

negative- just before my teacher training, one of the lecturers from a uni i got rejected from, told me the reason was that i would never be able to teach shakespeare properly because i hadn’t covered it in my degree.
i was too scared to teach shakespeare for two years, and avoided it at all costs.
(taught it this year and the group said they’ve never enjoyed Shakespeare so much. ok, they’re adults and very easy to please but still!)

anyone else want to share their experiences. it would be interesting to see how much of an effect words can have on someone’s life!
